All is Lost

allislost

All is Lost is a tediously stressful experience from the first minute to the last.  Robert Redford’s character is sailing alone across the Indian Ocean when his boat is damaged and then the storms start.  There are virtually no words spoken, except for some internal dialog that opens the film, one SOS message, and a swear word.  There isn’t any further internal dialog throughout the film or any indication why he would attempt this solo trip.  He shows almost no emotion, except for the one swear word, as things continue to deteriorate.  It is impressive, however, that he did all the stunts himself.

Box Office Bottom Line:  I found the film tedious, stressful, and slow.  Maybe people very interested in sailboat survival might get something out of it.

Catching Fire (Hunger Games #2)

The second movie in the Hunger Games trilogy was fast paced and engrossing from start to finish. Katniss has inspired resistance to the government, and President Snow threatens her to tow the line or she will regret it. She and Peeta go on their victors’ tour and then get forced into the Quarter Quell – an all-star hunger game, competing against a set of previous victors from each district. During it all, Katniss’ priority is to keep her family, Peeta, and Gale safe. She never looses that focus even though she knows that both Peeta and Gale want more than friendship from her. She cares for them both, but refuses to address romance when there are more important things at stake. I love that she has her priorities straight!

Box Office Bottom Line: I loved this sequel! Get ready for the revolution!
